hey guys i just got my 06 2.5i with a 5sp last week. i've noticed a noise everynow and again. it seems to only happen in 2nd and 3rd gear. it almost sounds like a suction as if i had a short ram intake(car is completely stock). it kinda sounds like there a little bit of a metal noise in there also, kinda like how it would sound if you had worn out brake pads. its really hard to explain. it only seems to happen in the first few miles of driving the car as the motor is heating up.

i'm really lost on how to explain it. i do have a warranty and could bring it in but i dont want to if its just a normal cold engine intake noise.:?

Is it connected to (i.e. does the pitch change with) engine speed or road speed?
Does it happen on-throttle, off-throttle or both?
If you push the clutch in does the noise stop?

to be honest, everytime it makes the noise i've been to distracted at listening to it to think of trying those things. i'll check all that out next time i go for a drive.

after driving it a little bit ago im almost convinced its the A/C. kinda seems like it could be the clutch on the ac pump. sorry if this isnt the actual name of it.

Easy way of checking that is to sit at idle and switch on the A/C. The revs should dip just a tiny bit and you should hear the noise.

Our Legacy makes a little chirp when the A/C clutch engages. I know the serpentine belt needs replacing - I presume it's slipping for a moment from the extra load.

well it is the A/C. i was driving and it started making the noise, so i quick flipped the hvac controls to off, and it went away. then i flipped them back on and it came back. it doesnt do it all the time though. it will randomly happen every now and again.. never at idle though. it somewhat seems like its just the fan making the noise.

i also played with the fan settings. it will do it on the 1 and 2 speed settings, but not on 3+.

EDIT: i just now realized i posted this in the 2008+, instead of 02-07, sorry about that.
