hey i was wondering how deep in water can you cross with a subaru before stalling...i know that having a cold air intake will not help this matter since it literally seats at the bottom of the bumper, but what kind of equipment other than getting a short ram or higher intake would help in this matter?

get a bypass for your intake so that you can get the filter wet and not suck up water?

I have plans for a custom snorkel intake. :)

nice! how are you gonna do that?

Dont foget the exhust. You can get water to backtrack through the tail pipe too. Thats the way my pop flooded his neon.

Heres the waterline that I had on my L for a while. I was running a CAI.

http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/medium/3242PICT0903resized.JPG

I ran through a puddle that was probably about 18"->24" deep at about 20 mph. it was a pretty steep drop in so it was actually under the water for a bit. there is a video somewhere out there. after i made it through the car bogged and coughed for a few seconds then was back to normal. the exhuast back wash isnt that much to worry about you just need to keep you foot on the gas. I would be more worried about electrical stuff, such as spark plugs and stuff. we are pretty well of with a coil pack instead of a distributor. but a putting some of that electical grease around things wouldnt hurt.

I've waded out in puddles that covered the stock 205/55-16 tyres, and with my tien S-Tech Springs... with the stock intake and no issues other thanmy door seals leak... No not driving fast through em, taking my time @ 5mph, to get through them...

yeah but since i haven't seen a stock intake doesn't the stock intake sit higher, cause i doesn't drop like the cold air intake does it? so i would imagine with either a short ram or the bypass (thanx \m/metalneverdies\m/ didnt' know such thing was available) shold be ok right?

just always keep in mind, if you tend to stick int he puddles, and water crossings things such as wheel bearings and gear/oils like to get ruined and start to destroy themselves. Be sure to keep them greased, and changes fluids regularly, especially if your in water deep enough to possibly have water seep in the vent tubes. You would be surprised but somehow it always tends to hey in the most sealed up places.

At the first dirty meet i hit that "small lake" going about 60 mph and plowed across the whole thing. One time i did actually through a CEL (i forget which one, but it indicated that moisture got through the filter, etc) So that wasnt too rad. A few months later i did an oil analysis through blackstone labs, and i think some dirt ended up getting all the way into the motor and caused some increased wear on the cylinder walls. Not excessive, but i was told to keep an eye on it.

So yeah take it easy out there!

I hydrolocked my Talon. Splashing through a puddle. It was not cool. I wish I had pictures of the block. I blew the con rod out the side of #1 cylinder. The hole was big enought to put you fist in it. The only thing left was part of the con rod on the crank and half the piston. I also bent the balence shafts.

can i got through like 6 inch or 8 inch puddles no problem? or even like that much mud with out worrying about getting water in my intake/engine? (has stock intake and air box on it)

what I commonly use as a guide is the center of my hub, i try to keep water below that at all times.

If its a puddle and its a stock airbox, youd be fine. I was literally crossing a lake.

You can see it here:

Fast forward to 0:30 this might have been the actual run that i threw the CEL on :angryfinger:

I've got a jeeper friend who has a snorkel and runs his jeep to the top in water... he said the main thing about the exhaust is to keep on the throttle
I have plans for a custom snorkel intake. :)
Really? I was talkin to my aforementioned jeeper buddy about fabricating one for my OBS

snorkels would seem best... and CAI would be worst. I suppose a normal driver would not need to worry about having a snorkel, so I suppose you could be okay with a short ram (make sure it doesnt **** up your engine!).

Other option... Do it like the guys from Harold and Kumar (#1) just yell EXTREMMMEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!111 and hope for the best.

if it dies, and you think you might be deep enough for the water to go back through the exhaust and up the motor dont start it. thats all. you can drive through water way over the exhaust and no big deal. if you look you can find videos of old landcruisers going through a river crossing with only the guys head and his snorkel sticking out of the water, cant find it right now though.

may not have been able to find it because old land rovers > land cruisers any day (in my mind at least). Growing up in Africa helped with that bias.

i was ontop of a frozen field

and it was about 2 foot deep in one spot, i came over the top of a hill at around 50 mph
got a bit of hair and came down to see a flat spot (ice) and well i slowed down as much as possible by throwing it sideways and slammin the breaks. so i got it straightened out and aimed for a shrub.

hit the shrub and we didn't fall through
then i heard the ice crack... crack again, and before i could get it in reverse, i fall through. the water was up to my headlights. and the subaru never stalled.

i was making 20 foot rooster tails in that water trying to get it out, had my buddy come in his big truck and pull me out, then we went back to the mudding, only damage was my front fender bolts broke so my fender was loose on the bottom(driver side)

it takes a bunch of water to get through the stock intake.

THANK GOD :D
