My girlfriend is shopping for a car, and really wants a subie. She wants something some what new(2001+), with lower mileage(under 50k). She is pretty open about the models because she is still shopping around, but what we don't know is, What Subaru's suck? She was looking at a 2001 Forester with 28k on it, but we have been reading some horrible reviews about it. Check engine lights, head gaskets... stuff we do not want to worry about.
I personally want to find her a 2001 2.5RS
Oh yeah, this is the worst part about trying to find her a car... It HAS to be an automatic  .....

Umm, I know it's not in your price and most likely miles. But my mom has a '99 Forester S, and that thing is amazing. It
s got 170,000 on it, and there have been no major problems with it at all. Just keep it serviced and treat it well.
Good luck!

Time to convert her... Get her a WRX, it worked on my wife.

 Honestly I would drive a baja. I think a desert truck would be cool. Sorry I guess thats my weird side but its true........... As to any that "suck" I cant say that I know of any. Almost any car can suck or be the car that lasts forever and its a Suby, they are like the timex of cars for crying out loud!

Then get a BAJA! im sure you can get one for 14K since they are the black sheep of the Subaru Clan. I dont have the pictures online but i saw a Baja at my local snowboarding spot last year that had the STi brembo conversion, swaybars, and all kinds of stuff. I had to admit it was pretty BA

really? I didn't think there was much out there for mods for a Baja. at least not for power, you kinda have to be OK with the stock power output I think.

Baja's are not easy to find.
We have looked at 2 cars so far...
2005 Impreza RS w/18k for $13,990
-Good shape
-Low miles
-Warrenty
It was in a little fender bender and had the drivers fender and bumper replaced. Only cosmetic damage. I noticed the bumper was not clipped in right to the fenders, told the dealer about it since they did the body shop work. We also told them about a trim peice that was missing/broken and to have that taken care of under warrenty. They said the car is AS IS.... WTF? You are a Subaru dealer, take the car in the shop and fix it and you have a deal.... They were being dicks about this whole situation, so we told them to go jerk off someone else. All they had to do was fix these minor things and the car was SOLD... Nope, instead they lost a customer and we will not recommend anyone to go there. BTW, it was Don Jacobs in Wisconsin.
2006 Impreza RS w/3k!! for $14,800
-LOW miles!
-Warrenty
-Good shape
I found out it was a rental car from NJ through a carfax I ran here at work. We went to look at it thinking it was to good to be true. Drove there with the intent on driving it home. Car looked CLEAN from pictures online... Got there, swirl marks galore! (it was black) Few dings here and there, nothing to bad. Something just didnt feel right about the car when we were looking at it. The interior looked hacked up. Trim peices were jacked. Then we looked in the trunk, STANDING WATER!!! I figured out that the rear window was replaced, and they ****ed up the left side moulding, causing it to leak water. Screw that!
Now we are going to go look at this Forester on Monday...
2001 Forester w/28K for $12,500
-One owner
-Low miles
-Appears to be in good shape from pictures
-Clean CarFax

Baja's use the same EJ25 as any other Impreza, Legacy, Forester of the same year. Most Impreza things will fit a Baja. There's also a lift-kit you can get for it.
As for what sucks... Stay away from any pre-'99ish Subaru that has a DOHC 2.5. They are known for bad headgaskets, and the sparkplugs are a PITA to replace (even moreso than any other Boxer). This includes the 98 Impreza 2.5 RS, Some 95-99 Legacies, and I think Foresters.
Good luck!

BTW our local suby modder Forced Air Tech. has many modded Bajas. There is a whole bunch of stuff you can do with them, and, if Im not mistaken, they have a turboed model......

I have always wanted to buy a Baja and do an STi swap. Nobody would suspect a truck thing to blow the doors off of thier 'Maro.
Baja FTW!!!

Damn, this story ended up being longer then I expected.... Sorry!
well, we looked at a 2001 Forester S. It was listed at $12500, so we figured, heck why not? It only had 28K on the clock, which made it sound even better. They send us some pictures, and everything looked good. It was at a Volvo dealer, so we took the 1.5hr trip to check it out. Got there and was disappointed right from the start. First of, the thing was DIRTY. They knew we were coming down to look at it, why not run it through the wash?? I mean, some dust is fine, but this was just dirty. The black trim was all faded on it as well. The interior was pretty damn nice! Leather, wood, HUGE sunroof, and CLEAN. Only thing was that there was a slight dog smell, but it was not to bad. The engine started and ran great! Poped the hood.. wtf?? The engine bay was filthy! Looked like it got sprayed with some kind of black goo that dried up over the years. It wasn't on the motor, just the firewall, inner fenders, hood... all of the engine compartment panels. I looked under it and noticed the diff was damp, and the trans looked a little wet... Well, whatever.. Lets just drive it. Drove good, but we still were not sold on it yet. We told them that we wanted to go eat and think about it, so they threw us the keys, and told us to take the Forester to get some food. Sweet! We took it and ate, then I told my gf to stop at this Subaru dealership that we passed not to far from where we were... I thought I saw a Forester out in front for $14995... So we go there and WOW, this is a NICE forester!!! 2004 Forester 2.5 XS w/32k!! GREAT shape! Suddenly the 2001 we were in looked like crap. Its black with a really nice gold flake. We checked it out for a while, then decided to return the turd that we came down here to see, to come back and test drive the 04. Well one thing lead to another and it was a done deal! I am really happy that we found her a car that we can trust!
Oh yeah, guess what she asked me?? "Can you make me a light bar?" ....... HAHAHAHA.. I love this girl! I am going to pimp this thing out for her!

Hahaha, yeah. They helped point a few things out on the 01' as well since they see these things a lot. The 04 is the newest body style too... Shes happy, which makes me happy. I just like the fact that I do not have to work on her 95 Blazer anymore!
